AI is quickly shaping and fueling the future of humanity across every industry imaginable. At the center of this race is the “strategic partnership” of Microsoft and OpenAI who recently formed the new “Azure Open AI” service where the two companies have engaged in supercomputing at scale never seen before and the creation new AI-powered experiences which marries both the Microsoft Azure cloud platform and OpenAI platform which includes the newly released ChatGPT. You often hear a lot of hype around modern technology, however nothing like the recent debut in November 2022 of the ChatGPT bot which gained one-million users within 5-days! Many executives and venture capitalists have compared it to Apple’s 2007 debut of the iPhone.
Microsoft’s initial investment of 1 billion however has now been followed up by a 10 billion investment which will help merge the OpenAI advanced AI technology to the Microsoft Azure cloud platform. Some Microsoft employees are calling this a “system design paradigm” in rebuilding the Azure Machine Learning tools on the OpenAI platform. According to Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella “In the next phase of our partnership, developers and organizations across industries will have access to the best AI infrastructure, models and toolchain with Azure and run their applications.”
This strategic partnership has captured the attention of industry competitors like Google executives over ChatGPT latest release instant success which sparked panic at Google to an all-hands meetings and code-red alerts to evaluate their current AI tools and roadmap. Google’s reputation has been seriously challenged and could suffer if it moves too fast on AI.
OpenAI History
OpenAI initially started out in 2015 as a non-profit and stated it would “freely collaborate” with other researchers and institutions by making its patents and research open to the public. Founder Gene Brockman met with one of the founders of the “Deep Learning” movement Yoshua Bengio to create a list of some of the “best researchers in the field”, out of that list nine employees were hired. Even though most of the employees were not paid top salaries OpenAI was able to recruit top talent based on the quality of the extraordinarily strong group of researchers they hired.
The San Francisco based company quickly matured with founders Sam Altman (OpenAI CEO), Peter Thiel (Investor – PayPal and X), Greg Brockman (OpenAI President, Chairman), Ilya Sutskever (Chief Scientist), Wojciech Zaremba (Codex research and language Lead), John Schulman (Research Scientist) and Elon Musk (Tesla, SpaceX), Musk was an active member of the board until February 2018 when he resigned due to conflicts of interest of Tesla’s AI development. Musk sold his shares to Microsoft in 2018.
The business model soon changed from Non-Profit to For-Profit in 2019 and started paying corporate-level salaries including stock options that helped attract top talent. With Microsoft’s investments and strategic partnership, OpenAI’s reputation soon grew and was ranked by AI researchers as one of the top three AI labs in the world. The company gained notoriety for taking on challenges like building game-playing AI software that can beat humans at video games. However, it is the most famous for building the AI text generator GPT-3 and AI image generator Dall-E.

April 2016 – OpenAI released its first public beta “OpenAI Gym” which is an environment for developing and testing learning agents. It is focused and best suited for reinforcement learning agent but does not restrict one to try other methods such as hard coded game solver / other deep learning approaches.

OpenAI Universe
December 2016 – OpenAI released “Universe” which was a platform for measuring and training AI intelligence across interactive games, applications, and websites. Universe can be used to turn it into a Gym environment. Universe works by automatically launching the program behind a VNC remote desktop.

OpenAI Five
2016-2019 – OpenAI used a multiplayer video game Dota 2 as a research platform for general-purpose AI systems testing. The system is trained using a combination of supervised learning, where it is trained on historical game data and reinforcement learning, where it learns by playing the game against itself. This allows the model to learn strategic elements of the game and the tactical skills required to succeed. The model has been able to defeat professional players in exhibition matches.

DALL-E
January 2022 – A generative model that can generate images from text descriptions. It is based on GPT-3 model, which is one of the most advanced language models developed by OpenAI. DALL-E uses a transformer-based architecture, which allows it to process copious amounts of data and generate high-quality images. It is trained on a dataset of images and text descriptions, which enables it to understand the relationship between the two. One of the primary features of DALL-E is its ability to generate images from text descriptions that are not present in the training data. DALL-E is released as an API (Application Programming Interface) which allows developers to generate images from text descriptions in real time, making it easy for them to integrate the technology into their own application.

ChatGPT/InstructGPT
November 2022 – GPT-3 chatbots are programmable artificial intelligence applications built on development work by OpenAPI and powered by the GPT-3 language model.
OpenAI trained a model called ChatGPT which interacts in a conversational way. The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests. ChatGPT is a sibling model to InstructGPT, which is trained to follow an instruction in a prompt and provide a detailed response.

Microsoft rolling out Azure Open AI service with access to Chat GPT soon.
American tech giant Microsoft is all set to roll out Azure Open AI service this week, which will allow businesses to integrate tools like DALL-E into their own cloud apps. According to The Verge, an American technology news website, the Azure service has been under test at Microsoft for just over a year, and it will soon include access to Chat GPT, the conversational AI that made headlines last year. The Azure Open AI service features a number of AI models made by Open AI including GPT-3.5, Codex, and DALL-E, so businesses and developers can utilize these systems in their own apps and workloads.
